Smashed Fresh, Served Hot, Gone Fast

Poughkeepsie's most-craved smash burgers and loaded fries, crafted with real care on Academy Street.

About Us

Somewhere between 12 PM and last call, something special happens at Sundaze Smash Burgers on Academy Street. The griddle is screaming hot, the onion bacon jam is bubbling, and whoever's behind the counter probably already knows your order. With a 4.8-star rating across over 413 reviews, this place has earned its reputation one perfectly smashed patty at a time.

The story that keeps getting repeated in reviews isn't about the food, though the food is genuinely outstanding. It's about the owner pausing mid-cook to scoop a child into a full embrace, laughing like the burger could wait. That moment says everything. This is a spot where the person making your food actually gives a damn, and you taste it.

From the OG burger that regulars swear is more than enough, to the Papi burger loaded with that legendary onion bacon jam, every item on the menu is built to make an impression. The loaded fries alone have earned their own cult following, arriving crispy and staying that way. Open seven days a week with late-night hours on weekends, Sundaze is Poughkeepsie's answer to the question: where do we go when we're really hungry?

What We Offer

The menu at Sundaze is focused and deliberate. No filler, no fluff. Smash burgers are the main event, pressed hard against a screaming-hot flat-top to create that signature crust that no oven-baked patty can replicate. Signature builds like the Papi burger come layered with toppings that were clearly thought through, not just thrown on.

The supporting cast is just as serious. Loaded fries arrive piled high with cheese that melts into every crevice, consistently called some of the best in the region by first-timers and regulars alike. Whether you're stopping in for a quick lunch or rolling through on a Friday night close to 2 AM, the kitchen holds its standard from open to close.

Dine in, take out, or just walk up to the counter and ask what's good. The ordering experience is counter-service and casual, but the food lands at your table like it came from somewhere that cares a lot more than casual.

"Even their least expensive (OG) burger is tasty and more than enough for me. I second that the onion bacon jam on the Papi burger is delicious. Service is good- you order at the counter and they bring the burger to you wherever you choose to sit in the huge Academy space. I love the retro bathrooms there as well."

"Food: Sundaze Smash Burgers really delivered, but the loaded fries were the thing that completely stole the show. They were easily some of the best cheese fries I’ve ever had. The fries stayed crisp enough to hold up, the cheese was melted all through, and the sauce on top made the whole thing rich, messy, and ridiculously satisfying without turning into a soggy pile. That is the difference between loaded fries that just look good and loaded fries that actually eat well. These were the kind you keep picking at even after you say you are done. The burgers were great too. The patties had that smashed, browned-edge flavor you want, with enough crust to give each bite some texture. The cheese melted into the meat, the bun stayed soft, and the whole burger felt simple in the best way. Nothing was trying too hard. It was just a really good smash burger with the right amount of grease, salt, and structure. Service: Service was quick and straightforward. The food came out fresh, and everything felt easy, which fits exactly what you want from a burger spot. Summary: Easy 5/5. The burgers were great, but the loaded cheese fries were the reason this place really stood out. I would absolutely go back for those alone."

"Before I even talk about the burger, I want to describe something my wife and I witnessed. The owner was making our burger when a child came up and went straight into his arms, and the two of them started interacting in such a beautiful way. Even with his daughter in his arms, he kept making our burger. No matter where you are, family comes first. It really shows this is a family-oriented place, full of love. Wishing you guys all the best on your journey. And yes—the burger is amazing, juicy, and made with quality ingredients."

"Time visiting were the servers gave such great recommendations from the OG burger, fries, and the amazing watermelon iced tea. The burger has so much flavor and Life. The fries were well seasoned with the cheese sauce. The atmosphere had so much life. I just wish I came earlier in the day rather than a night."

"Mandatory tip on carry-out? Just ordered a burger and fries for carryout and the guy put on 10% tip. Ipaid cash, but he didn't ask me if I was okay with it, just gave me the total. And of course there's a tip jar waiting there as if they deserve more. Next guy in our party paid with a card and same thing: 10% tip on the bill and then it asked if he wanted to give a tip again?! If your prices are too low that you need to charge mandatory tips, just increase your menu price and quit being so sneaky when it comes to taking people's money!! Probably hides it better if you're not here in person. Grill wasn't hot and fryer wasn't up to temp yet so we waited nearly 20 minutes even though they had been 'open' for 10-15 minutes. The worst part is the food is delicious, so I almost want to subject myself to that punishment again?! Atmosphere looks like it will be cool someday, but it is being built up with decor and food products not organized, still on tables and counters when we came in around 12:15; set-up should not happen with customers in the building. Feels like a disorganized teenager is running the operation 😒 2 of the places were not yet operational but will give the area a food court vibe, with an almost nightclub scene, but it's just not finished."
